What are didactic implications of teaching in a (culturally) diverse student population? What are the challenges? How do you design (workgroup) teaching that fits this group, making your course more inclusive, creating a safer learning environment? The course “Diverse and inclusive education?” addresses these questions.

The course equips academic staff to take on the challenges of university teaching to a diverse population and designing tutorials that best fits their needs. The course provides hands-on practice and tailored strategies that can be directly implemented in your own teaching context.

Suitable for

Dutch and international lecturers who teach in a (culturally) diverse or international classroom and want to know more about the didactic implications of teaching in their diverse classroom.

Entry requirements

It is important that you have teaching activities at the time of the course, so that theory can be put into practice.

Price

The price depends on the customized agreement. The wishes and number of participants also determine the price. A cost indication can be given upon request.

Fee for UU lecturers

Lecturers of Utrecht University can use O&T units (if available) or can otherwise participate at reduced rates. In either case in consultation with their own faculty.

Each of the three sessions will focus on one theme: Awareness, Communication, Tutorials.

Session 1 - Awareness

During the first session, we will discuss what diversity means as well as its various aspects, the importance of classroom dialogue and how to deal with (potentially) sensitive topics in classroom discussions. After this session, participants will be asked to filled out the curriculum reflection tool. This tool, developed at the UU, elicits reflection around different aspects of a course in regards to inclusion, diversity and equality.

Session 2 - Communication

Diversity in your classroom practically always show differences in communication (verbal as well as nonverbal). We invite you to bring in your own examples of interesting or difficult situations in your courses due to diversity in communication so we can discuss and analyze them.

Session 3 - Tutorials

During this last session, the focus will be on how to establish a safe learning environment during the (crucial!) first meeting with your students, what you as a lecturer can do to be inclusive in your teaching and the importance of using an inclusive language. In addition, we will discuss reflections elicited by filling out the reflection tool and how we can help each other to make our education more accessible/suitable for various minority groups.

How

We will do this by having a lot of interaction, working together on exercises and reflecting on cases and your own position when coping with these situations.
