(Re)designing a research proposal for PhD students
A sharp research question and a well-thought-through research plan are key to successful completion of your PhD trajectory. In this course you learn how to go about (re)designing your research proposal in a systematic way.
Formulating a clear and concise research question lies at the basis of research across all disciplines. But there are many aspects to it and it can be challenging to tackle them all. How do you know if your research question is properly embedded in the relevant research area(s) and discipline(s)? For whom and why is this question relevant? Which approach is the most suitable and feasible to answer your research question? And how to best break down your main research questions into smaller sub-questions so you can take doing your research step-by-step?
In three in-person course meetings we will discuss the most important aspects of designing a research proposal, of which the research question forms the basis. We will do so by the structure model of Oost (2006). Before every course meeting, you will hand in a transfer assignments that together will form a concept research proposal. You will receive feedback on these assignments by the facilitator and your peers.
This course is suitable for PhD students from all disciplines, in particular for those who are at the start of their PhD trajectory. The course provides you with the tools to find your own niche in an existing research proposal and to come up with a well thought through and executable research plan.
