Data School Delivers Five-Part AI Course for the Municipality of Utrecht

AI Act: At the Intersection of Law, Technology, and Ethics

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) presents professionals in public administration with complex challenges. In addition to broader issues surrounding data and technology, the European AI Regulation has now come into force. Organizations must comply with this legislation, and starting February 2025, it will be mandatory to have sufficient AI expertise in-house. This knowledge must be tailored to the specific context in which AI systems are used and the potential impact they have on individuals and communities. This makes upskilling essential.

To support civil servants in understanding and operating within this changing landscape, Utrecht University is launching a course in early 2025 that focuses on the legal, technological, and ethical aspects of AI. Offered in collaboration with the Municipality of Utrecht, the course consists of five in-depth sessions that fully immerse participants in the AI Regulation.

What does this program offer?

After completing this course, participants will:

  • Gain insight into relevant legislation: including the AI Act and its implications.
  • Acquire practical knowledge of AI and data: including procurement, implementation, and management of AI systems.
  • Practice AI and data literacy: to understand the real-world impact of technology.

The course builds on the expertise of the Data School, which has trained professionals for years in the Netherlands, Finland, and Austria. Well-known programs include the IAMA training, DEDA workshops, and the course on Responsible Data Practices. Starting this fall, the Data School will also launch a new executive program: AI Governance.

Target audience

This course is designed for professionals in public administration who wish to deepen their understanding of technology, law, and ethics—particularly in relation to AI and the AI Regulation.
