Equine Ophthalmology

Ophthalmic conditions are commonly encountered in equine first-opinion practice. A thorough ophthalmic examination is the foundation of an accurate diagnosis, supplemented by additional diagnostic techniques when needed. During this hands-on course, you will learn how to perform a systematic eye examination and identify and assess common ocular disorders in horses. You will also practise essential clinical skills, including the placement of a subpalpebral lavage system, a valuable technique for horses that are difficult to treat with topical eye medication.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

• Perform a systematic and comprehensive ophthalmic examination in the horse.
• Recognise and differentiate common equine eye diseases based on clinical examination and additional diagnostic techniques.
• Apply fundamental ophthalmic diagnostic skills in clinical practice.
• Place a subpalpebral lavage system safely and effectively.

This course is designed for equine veterinarians working in first-opinion practice who wish to expand their knowledge and practical skills in equine ophthalmology. It is suitable for practitioners who want to improve their confidence in diagnosing and treating ophthalmic conditions in horses.

Equine veterinarians are regularly called upon to examine horses with eye conditions, both during routine consultations and emergency duty. A solid understanding of equine ophthalmology enables practitioners to assess these patients more confidently, make timely diagnoses, and initiate appropriate treatment. In addition, changing weather patterns and the increasing diversity of horse breeds are contributing to a higher incidence of ophthalmic conditions, making up-to-date knowledge and practical skills more important than ever.

This course addresses these challenges by combining current diagnostic approaches with extensive hands-on training. It also provides an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences, discuss clinical cases, and learn from colleagues working in equine practice.

This hands-on course combines interactive lectures with extensive practical training. You will begin by learning the principles of equine ophthalmic examination and how to perform a systematic eye examination. You will then explore the recognition and diagnosis of common ocular disorders and become familiar with additional diagnostic techniques. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you will immediately apply your new knowledge in practical sessions, including the placement of a subpalpebral lavage system.

Practical

• Performing a full eye examination;
• performing diamond burr debridement;
• fitting a subpalpebral lavage system;
• taking samples (swab, cytobrush);
• flushing the tear duct (via the nose and via the eye).
